We evaluated the growth performance of pacu and tambaqui and their reciprocal hybrids (tambacu and paqui) under different feeding programs. We raised 30 individuals from each species and their respective crosses, distributing them into three replicate cages with 10 individuals each. Throughout the 5-month experimental period, the fish were weighed six times while exposed to diverse feeding regimens involving three commercial diets with varying combinations of crude protein (CP) levels: 24%, 28%, and 32%. Growth curves were adjusted using nonlinear models. The evaluation period was insufficient for adjusting the logistic model for the tambaqui and paqui treatments with the highest initial protein intake. Pure pacu had a higher (p < 0.05) growth rate (k = 0.0185) than in the tambacu hybrid (k = 0.0134) and proved to have an early performance since animals from this group reached their weight at inflection faster. Despite growing more slowly, tambacu reached a higher (p < 0.05) final weight (A = 1137.12) than in the pacu (A = 889.12). Among the feeding programs, animals that received less CP showed greater growth potential; however, longer evaluation is important to verify if the initial CP intake has no significant positive effect on fish growth.

Red tilapia is a phenotype with potential value to the tilapia industry due to its attractive skin coloration. However, the presence of black blotches scattered on the body makes these fish less valuable than blemish-free red fish. The correlation between the degree of blotching and other economic traits is important for selective breeding programs including high-performance red fish without black blotches. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude and direct and indirect effects of blotching in crossbred red tilapia on the growth rate and body measure traits using path analysis methodology. Six genetic groups were evaluated in terms of body measurements, body weight rate, and proportion of black blotching over 250 days of growth: Chitralada and Red-Stirling; crossbred F1-♀ Red-Stirling × â™‚ Chitralada and ♀ Chitralada × â™‚ Red-Stirling, and the introgressive crossbreeding-♀ CR × â™‚ Chitralada and ♀ Chitralada × â™‚ CR (C × CR). All variables showed high and positive linear correlations. Individuals with black blotches had lower coefficients of correlation with other variables (body weight and measurements); the direct and indirect effects are near zero. The path analysis indicated a lack of genetic correlation between the degree of black blotches and the economic traits of red tilapia. This facilitates the development of high growth performance red fish with blotched-free reddish skin.

Growth is one of the most important traits from both a physiological and economic perspective in aquaculture species. Thus, identifying the genomic regions and genes underpinning genetic variation for this trait is of particular interest in several fish species, including rainbow trout. In this work, we perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the genomic regions associated with body weight at tagging (BWT) and at 18 months (BW18M) using a dense SNP panel (57 k) and 4596 genotyped rainbow trout from 105 full-sib families belonging to a Chilean breeding population. Analysis was performed by means of single-step GBLUP approach. Genetic variance explained by 20 adjacent SNP windows across the whole genome is reported. To further explore candidate genes, we focused on windows that explained the highest proportion of genetic variance in the top 10 chromosomes for each trait. The main window from the top 10 chromosomes was explored by BLAST using the first and last SNP position of each window to determine the target nucleotide sequence. As expected, the percentage of genetic variance explained by windows was relatively low, due to the polygenic nature of body weight. The most important genomic region for BWT and BW18M were located on chromosomes 15 and 24 and they explained 2.14% and 3.02% of the genetic variance for each trait, respectively. Candidate genes including several growth factors, genes involved in development of skeletal muscle and bone tissue and nutrient metabolism were identified within the associated regions for both traits BWT and BW18M. These results indicate that body weight is polygenic in nature in rainbow trout, with the most important loci explaining as much as 3% of the genetic variance for the trait. The genes identified here represent good candidates for further functional validation to uncover biological mechanisms underlying variation for growth in rainbow trout.
